The lower engine mount on my ZT had been "repaired" by someone shoving bolts through the holes in the bush to stop it knocking. This was discovered very shortly after buying the car and was soon corrected.

In the past when I was even more of an idiot than the idiot I am today I once got some one inch thick steel plate and used them to sandwich the broken leaf springs together on my Ford Capri by clamping them over them. Amazingly it actually transformed the road manners of the tail happy car by virtually giving it no rear suspension to speak of. It even managed to get through 4 years of mots without tester becoming suspicious.

Many years ago I helped a 'mate' do some work on his Viva he'd just got, full service and a new front wheel bearing, he had got himself a Haynes but tbh if I said he was as thick as.... it'd be an insult to wood..

Anyway followed my every step on the service and we had removed the old bearing and I was just starting to replace the hub etc when mum calls me for dinner 'I can finish off he say's'

An hour later his dad ask's me to go with him to recover the Viva, we find him and a few bits from the front along the local dual carriageway with said wheel dangling loosely in the arch.

He'd done the axle nut up as tight as he could with a torque wrench and at about 50mph after smoking a bit (which he'd ignored) it had seized and ripped off the stub axle...

Told you he was thick..

More like 5 or 6 small nuts and bolts through the holes in the bush.

How about a wooden piston in a Moggie Minor, it had a bolt put through as a gudgeon pin counter sunk each side of the piston so bolt did not bang on the cylinder wall, a piece of metal cut to fit the top of the piston to stop it burning when the spark plug fired, held in place by nails. Also there were some small holes drilled through the top of the piston to lower the compression so as not to put to much pressure on the piston, And it worked for quite a while.
