That, I would suggest, solely depends on the context in which it's being used. The way it was used the other day was, IMO, derogatory and I got the impression that the user meant it to be so.

Thats very interesting i must say ,
If that person was posting stuff that was within the definition of trolling ie "a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages" Then why not.

In that case there were far more than three trolls in that thread. Wonder why they weren't all given time to consider their futures.

I tend to agree with Flyer, it is normally used with the intention of insulting someone, and it is also usually aimed at someone who consistently stirs up trouble and is rude and offensive to people. Seems the dictionary is a bit behind the times.....

I have yet to see anyone who genuinely "trolls" on this site, pro ably due to good moderating...

But I have seen some pretty awfull cases of it elswhere... MSN-mIRC chatrooms come to mind.

Default Mods please read....

As requested George I have read your thread. The word Troll is a recognised social networking site / forum term and has been for many a long year. To suggest it be censored and possibly placed into the swear filter, or be jumped on by us whenever it is used may be a little extreme.

Granted it is not by any means a complementary adjective when used in the context one's forum posting style, and I can see that the term if directed toward a specific individual could be found to be upsetting.

In relation to any recent instance of its usage where an individual member may have taken umbrage to its use, and in the interests of forum harmony, in this instance I believe there is due cause to remove any association to said, so point taken and any amendments to reflect this, will be made accordingly.
