Sounds like it flooded itself and washed the bores causing the temporary loss of compression you say you experienced with the fast cranking. Only a guess.

fuel contamination for sure ...some condensation in petrol

I agree with the flooding scenario.

I think I must have flooded it even more when I tried to get it going and probably just made matters worse.

Ho hum.....at leats I have my baby back for the Bank hol weekend now
