It is now a sad fact of life that more people now than ever are driving not only uninsured but with no license be they from this country or not, also more people are driving under the influence of drink or drugs be they illegal or prescription drugs.
Then you have the drivers whom have health problems whom should maybe not drive but have not notified the authorities because it may effect their living or independence, even then some will always take the chance and still drive and if they too cause an accident, their insurance would be void don't forget that all of the above have made that choice so in fact do not really care for anyone else but them selves in my opinion. I personally think that if you are stopped you should be P tested as well as blowing into a bag, as drugs stay in the system for at least a month as to the sentence for the offence, again it should be outlined which offence carries what, ie prescription drugs which you should not drive while taking auto ban of 12 months without going to court if tested positive, as with the first drink drive it is a standard 12 months should anyone get hurt during this offence then depending on how hurt the person was minimum of 3 years in prison. Surely this must stand for anyone whom is under the influance of drugs or drink be they prescibed or not. Lots of potential killers out there also i think we all would benefit from a retest every 5 years or at least a refresher test again only my opinion.

The stupid part is that most of the fines levied by the courts for driving whilst uninsured are considerably less than the cost of the insurance in the first place.
Whilst I am in no way qualified to comment on how you alter the mindset of such offenders to be aware of the human consequences of their actions, surely a LARGE fine more in line with what they HAVEN'T paid in insurance costs might be a starter in cutting down the numbers? A strict implementation of the current law, i.e. if it isn't SORNed, then it MUST be insured, wouldn't do any harm. Simply issuing fines isn't enough - go round to the address on file at DVLA and confiscate the car!

Think its just going to increase... The price nowdays of running a car , tax just keeps going up , insurance companys charge , what they want... I DONT AGREE WITH IT, but i can see why people drive without insurance.. Times are very hard , and familys rely on a car to get to work, if some dont have a car , then they dont work ... Its just another example of how bad this country is getting , we are on our knees , and people are taking risks to survive ....

One of the very few (possibly only) things I am happy (ish) about in our surveillance society is that now the police have everything on their PNC computer, tax, MOT, insurance, it's more difficult for these scumbags to get away with it.
IIRC the last time we had a rash of uninsured drivers was in the 80s with the advent of the XR3i, 205GTI etc. Is it possible the government's excellent handling of the economy is driving people to take risks they wouldn't normally have done?

I, like many other honest people, pay a lot for car insurance and I believe this country is far too lenient on those who decide not to bother. A £300 fine is nothing to most as it is still cheaper than a lot of insurance policies. If the fine was closer to £1000, and wasn't means tested, a lot more would suddenly buy insurance. My brother used to drive round with no insurance. I tailed him a few times and then tipped off the Police as to where and when he is likely to be in certain places. They eventually caught him and crushed his car. I did it as I have a 3 year old daughter and would hate something happening to her as the result of an incident of being hit by an uninsured driver. Some may say I was being harsh but I believe I had done everything I could by talking to him to no avail. Family or no family, uninsured drivers should be stopped.
Rik.
