and the considerable difference it can make to the smooth flow of oil in the system...
if the fluid he removed was burnt and black I would think the filter is at least partially blocked

yes, I have the engine out of my ZT a couple of years ago and did many jobs on it while access was easier.

you can get access by loosening the engine mounts and dropping the subframe a bit to get at that final pair of bolts holding the pan on...

my gearbox was a little jumpy and the filter was quite dirty, no swarf, just particles from the fibre discs on the planet clutches.

after re assembly and total new fluid she was as smooth as any new car I have hired over the years...

No guys,I didn't replace or clean the filter in trans, just the fluid.
As it happens, now i've put some miles on since the fluid change the trans is a lot better than before. The gurgling noises from cold starts have gone and once warm the gear changes are a lot smoother too. Pulling away with gentle throttle,no more than 2000 rpm,the only gearchange that you can really feel is the second to third change and that isn't too bad.

As for the previously mentioned groaning noise when starting from cold - this goes away once engine warms up. Am thinking this is a bearing noise, maybe on a belt tensioner pulley or alternator. Will dig out my stethoscope when I get a chance and see if I can locate where noise is coming from.

Have a few more things to sort out on the 75 but am more than happy with it so far

Hi Klarzy
I am confused now I thought the Jatco gearbox filter could only be removed by a virtual strip down out of the car?

Kev
Post 13 suggests just that ;] well engine removal , guessing 'box came out with it? Or at least left enough room to work on the box.

you can take the pan off if you lower the subframe, this gives access to the filter, you don't need to take whole box out...
The subframe cuts access to 2 or 3 bolts holding the pan on
