I've pushed a screwdriver through the grille to check the fan is free to spin and it moves easily. I guess I need a replacement cooling fan now.

Unless you've repaired/replaced the resistor, the fan test isn't going to work.

Oh I had no choice but to replace the resistor as one end of it was completely burned off. The term "catastrophic failure" springs to mind, lol.

OK, cool.

The fact that you said you were poking a screwdriver through the grille, it sounded like you hadn't had the bumper off.

I'm a little disappointed tbh as I thought the resistor popping would prevent fan motor damage but it appears not.

Hi David.
Not really as you have now proved the resistor is damaged, the fan will not run doing the test above, only once you have fitted a new gold resistor will you be able to test the fan, i note you have changed the resistor, so maybe one of the relays as burnt out, unless you have a T4 or someone close as one and then you could force the high speed to see if the fan motor is ok.

PS did you find the red damaged wire you posted about earlier in the thread ?

The red wire was, I think, the one that connects to the end of the gold resistor. Hard to say given that the end of the resistor and its spade terminal were completely burned off. I've tried to upload a picture but for some reason the forum isn't pulling the pic from the Imgur link.

HI David.
Usually both wires going to each end of the resistor are black, if it was red then the person whom fitted the gold resistor before you had the car as used red has an extension.

Regarding the photo, i presume you have photos already in Imgur ether on the main page or in album you may have made, therefore the photo you want to post you pick, then you just need to click the large thumb nail first.

Holy thread revival Batman.
After letting Brian loose (always a dangerous idea) on my car he confirmed that not only is my fan dead but also my shiny new gold resistor has dug itself an early grave. I also found out I need a heatshield for the fuel tank and some small "doggybone" connecting rod for my drivers door as the key doesn't operate the lock.
If you have any (or all) of the above then I can send you some doubloons in exchange?

:-)
