Me too due to the pacemaker, they send me a reminder and then they ask the consultant if I am fit to drive. Then they send the licence.

LOL Snap, I was going through the car folder the other week to see when the Rover MOT was up and came across my old licences.

There was a certain style with the old Class 1 HGV passport type licence.

If the above is the case it could be worth adding a note when sending the licence, stating your entitlements and that you have taken a photo copy, hopefully that will do the trick.

I have to renew my driving Licence in line with the 10 year rule, but then I have to renew my driver qualification card every three years( to do this I have to pay for 35 hours driver training), and my Driver Card (Digital Tachograph) every 5 years.... along with a full medical every five year it can be a little expensive

All components have to be valid and in place, or I can't drive my daily drive

Just had to renew mine 'cos of approaching 70, and was concerned over loss of some categories, including towing of trailers.

Decided to let C1/D1 (7.5ton + minibus) lapse as could not justify £100+ medical and eye checks. DVLA sight only mentions these catagories, so took a chance and renewed online. New license arrived with all expected categories, motor-cycle, car, trucks up to 3.5 tons, and the important car + trailer (I do quite a bit of car moving by trailer).

However, as others have said, with ALL dealings with the DVLA, keep a copy before sending to them.

I had to get a medical from a named doctor to see if I was fit to ride after doing 178 in a 90 limit. ( KPH ).-----( Those nasty Gendarmes. )

I passed with flying colours so now I go everywhere at 178.------------

The actual fact in my case , being of an age the license is renewed every three years, is that I've never sent the old licenses back. I still have them.--

Never heard anything more and no problems renewing.---

My neighbour got pulled and when he showed his licence the Police officer told him his licence had expired several months ago.and he better get it renewed ASAP, he apologised to the officer and he said don't worry about it as if he did every body he pulled over with an expired licence he would never leave the office due to amount of paper work he would have to do.

Maybe he was lucky but it sounds like there are a lot of people driving around with expired licences.

As far as loosing vehicles groups this seems to be the biggest problem, probably not a problem if you have a class you no longer use but taking a photo copy and picture is good insurance.

When I was in the coach game back in the day I legally drove those on a car licence.
