I could take the seat out but then I'd have to wire up a 12v battery, I might as well buy a multimeter for under a tenner and have something useful at the end of it.

The OP has stated that he is not confident with electrics, so following the safest way of testing seems a most sensible way to go forward.

if you were to take the seat out of the car and test it on a separate battery then that risk is negated, but again how confident is the OP..
phew thought I was giving duff advice but I may not have explained very well. I would disconnect the seat electrics from the rest of the car so I was only applying 12v to the seat. As the battery to seat is quite a distance I'd also disconnect the cars battery and take it to the seat or use a different battery.
