Norton software is basically horse poo - SystemWorks hogs everything and slows machines almost to a halt. Symantec have one of the worst customer service departments on the planet - they don't give a monkey's once they've got your money.

VCOM System Suite 8 on the other hand is an absolute gem (so is their tech support). SS8 has little impact on speed and includes antivirus, firewall, diagnostics & spyware etc.

Couldn't agree more - after 7 years I have ditched using their stuff in favour of AVG - and haven't looked back.

I had more success with AVG too a while back sorting out a friends laptop.

One other thing, I know I've said it before...if any of you guys are using routers..you don't need to install firewall software as it will undoubtably have a hardware-based (read: better, doesn't hog resources and doesn't necessarily need configuring).

Not that I'm endorsing Symantec or anything, but rather than pay their extortionate annual renewal, just buy an OEM disk when your subs run out. Just bought NIS 2008 for seventeen quid, (although I use AVG on my Linux box). I admit Symantec is a resource hog though...

Nah, just do a reinstall from scratch. Although I did do SWMBO's machine and just uninstalled the older version and it went peachy.....a reinstall is much better though...

Have you tried uninstalling SystemWorks Premier? It's a nightmare - leaves horse droppings absolutely everywhere. Live Update in particular is complete rubbish. A reformat & reinstall is the only way to get rid of it.

I wouldn't touch Norton again with a barge pole (even the Mother of all barge poles) if they paid me.

Talking of horse droppings, I've just spent ages trying to install the downloaded trial version of Photoshop CS3 Extended.

It refuses to install. Having tried several times and after reading countless posts from countless people with the same problem, I phoned Adobe UK.

They said "We don't provide support for the trial version" - so I said I didn't want to buy the darned thing if it didn't work. To which they replied "It does work - if you buy it and you can't get it to work, you can always phone us for support".

Crikey (said I) what a great idea.

So any minute now I'm off to buy CS3 just so I can phone Adobe and ask them how to get it to work.

I'm so excited I can't wait for the shops to open.

That's the thing about Adobe stuff - their customer support is really pathetic. I'm still on CS and unless there is a compelling reason otherwise I'm not shifting.
