Still working and 66 in January. I have a very expensive non car hobby and possibly will retire in 2021. At work to pay for said hobby and also because i love the job and the people i work with. Time soon though to move over and let someone else take up the reins but not just yet!

If I had known I was going to last this long I would have done a lot more bad things. Now, after ‘retirement’ of nearly thirty years and of following my own devices, I’ve come to the conclusion the trick is to get involved with a project that lasts longer than tomorrow.

I sometimes hear the saying “I wonder how I found the time to go to work” from retirees. I retired at 50 but only because the company wanted to reorganise and bring in shiny new contracts full of pie in the sky promises.

They made the outgoing t&c’s absolutely irresistible and even enhanced service terms in a concerted attempt to flush out the old and immovable guard. I still receive the quarterly house magazine and my first job is to scrutinise the Obituaries to make sure I’m not in it.

After a couple of years travelling I turned my hobby into a business, took large premises, and magically became the real me. It’s a brand new beginning and positivity is the spur to longevity.

We are all different and what works for some might not for others but you are free to find your own course. And it doesn’t matter how many courses you try, it’s the trying that matters. That, and a small tingle of excitement at a new life that contains only the conditions you decide to abide by.

My last job forced me to "jump through hoops" in order to progress to the higher salary scale. This involved all sorts of "training" and "skill specialising", none of which were needed or used in my work! Once on the higher pay scale, I was told that I was "too expensive" and was offered a retirement/redundancy package! That's what you get for doing everything asked of you! I retired and took on a number of part time jobs to fill the time. The smaller one man band companies were struggling to survive due to the demands of compliance and paperwork and the large corporates drove me crackers with all the form filling and "covering your b*m" stuff! I realised that I had enough of the non-working, working world, so I finally quit for good.

My time is now mine and the only thing that annoys me now is this darned lockdown which is wasting my precious me time! I haven't got as much of that left as I used to have so I hope that it doesn't last too long. Corfu beckons and I'm missing it greatly.

I've still got another 22 years until state retirement age. I love my job and if I can stay in it until then, I probably will do [already been with the same company 28 years!]. Although, that said, my wife has MS so she will probably retire in the next 5 to 10 years and so I might also retire early to be with her.

Whatever happens, we'll have fun.
