Settled on an Audi A5 Tdi... because granted with a private plate it'll look bob on, all the lasses will flock to his feet.. blah blah blah.

But in relality this is whats wrong, cars dont have soul anymore, you used to need a bit of know how to run older cars, so your dad passed on the knowledge that his grandfather passed on and so on.

Now with modern cars your dad just tells you to go to the local dealers and get that new car with its 2yrs free insurance for £250 a month.
There's just no passion in cars anymore.

I've grown up around cars and have ALWAYS been deep into them, i spend days toying with new ideas for my track car, fixing things or finding things to take apart and clean, going to motorsport events such as LeMan in france, Donnington, croft etc etc, and I try and get around to the car shows and watch the rallying.

Mk2 escorts howling through hamsterly forest just makes me imagine how good things were for rallying/motorsport in the 80/90s.. take group B rallying for example, see the videos of the crowds on youtube, never will we have anything like that again, people flocked because of the noise/raw/power of each Group B car, the public love crazy and nothing is crazy anymore so there's no interest!

With health and safety and emissions and a "only way is essex” style youth (I mean im only 26 but I feel old so Ill say youth) just doesnt give two hoots about this, theres no heritage or history in cars now either, they are all mass produced for a market that just wants to look good and get rid in 3yrs time.

Take my old B5 Audi for example, that thing has done 226 thousand miles… there is no way a modern car would do that, half of them are in scrap yards at 6/7yr old with 100k on the clock.. we live in a throw away community.
It saddens me deeply, as new cars get more technical and boring and hybrids/EVs take over due to the tree huggers it just makes things more and more dull, no more v12s no more v10s… the v8 is going, Audi are back to a V6 bi turbo because of emissions on the new gen RSs
So with all the fun taken away people just arent interested in it like they used to be, nobody tinkers with the fuel pump and carbs to make it go faster, you dont have to work ten paper rounds for a year so you could afford you fiesta 1.1 pop… you just roll down and take some finance.

I dunno guys, just gets me upset that all the heritage is lost and the younger generation wont follow it up… give it 30yrs and I honestly think motorsport will be gone completely, you look at events like goodwood and the average age of folk is middle to old… there is very few younger people.

Ill stop moaning now… honest.
Cars have always been used as a personality extension... nothing new about that. I liked my '75 however I was increasingly fed up with the feeling something else expensive will break.

I needed something reliable and economical as well as individual.

Nothing like that from a UK marque fitted that brief.

I drive over 400 miles a week most weeks.

Should my circumstances change, I'd love a V8 to play with however.

People are generally getting less and less interested in cars anyway.

That's why the default choices are so popular.

As for the GS; it is very ugly!

I expect it will be a hit, why?

Well at least this time they have done some advertising on television with a family onboard.

I keep an open mind on most things, until I actually see one up close I can't really comment, to me all of the SUV's that are currently on the market are ugly.

But I do know it's a massive market and many younger families where I live have bought various SUV's.

I do like the higher up driving stance and maybe one day I will be forced into getting something like that.
It might even be an MG GS.........

Thats it mate, cars are a dying breed... much like the rover/mg back when it started on the slippery slope to closure.
As you say if your not interested in something you just settle for something that does the job.

There's still a good nucleus of us entusiats but once we are gone i dont know who will follow suit.
Its the same all over the world not just the UK as car manufacturers world wide just build simiar dross!

Nothing is made to be classy and individual anymore! nothing modern will ever be as timeless as an E-Type Jaguar or a Aston DB5, Nissan 240z, Alfa romeo spider, Porsche 928, Dodge Charger.. etc.

Anyway... the GS, thumbs down all round for me!

Hi Russell, only just seen your post. Yes well put, it's styling certainly does make it a marmite car! Although it tends to be regarded as a French car, it was actually styled here in Coventry, but was built in France. Mine's been off the road for many years, but the sound of those twin triple choke Webers stays with you!

Cheers

I suspect that if it didn't have a (bought) MG badge, we wouldn't even be discussing it on here.

The "new" MGs have been embraced by the MG Car Club and the MG Owners Clubs and registers for them have been established and supported within those long running clubs. The Safety First club magazine regularly has articles about them. I attended an MG run with a mate in his MG3 in Lincolnshire and there was quite a bit of interest in it from other MG owners. One thing to consider is that as these clubs membership gets older they will find it increasingly difficult to get in and out of their low slung sports cars. The "new" MGs may be the way to go to allow them to run something new and modern while still allied to the marque.

Default Sat in at East Kirkby

During the East Lincs Rover Day a local franchise had three cars on show. Their last MG6 which they sold on the day with only 200 minutes kes on it at 8995
I think if I recall correctly.
The MG3 at under £9k
And the new MGS

Now I have to confess that despite not liking the pictures I have to say it looks very good in the flesh so to speak.
More importantly it is available in automatic form!
It was trimmed with full leather, full of gadgets has a very good driving position. It also has cheap road tax.
Can't say I liked the burnt orange mettalic but in say white or black I think it will look very good.
Lot of interest in it on day. Including all the gizmos it was available to order on then day at £20k. A lot of money to many of us but compared to others probably not bad value. Certainly cheaper than like fir like. They have also addressed the warranty issue with 5 years/80k now included.

Might be a replacement vehicle some day...when second hand ...and cheap...and my 75 gives up the ghost.

Don't make up your mind until you have seen it and remember what it is competing against. Pretty good
but no Rover 75

Well as the o p of this thread, I will give my input,I forgot I had posted this.

To me its just another compact SUV, nothing different ,looks like a Renault Kadjar, cant see it being a hot cake myself.
The MG 6 when it was launched,I liked the look of it fromqoutside, but thought the inside was awful, dashboard too high. I told the salesman this too,it was on an MG stand at the NEC classic show in 2011
