I seem to recall that all the faulty stats Jules found had failed in the open position, so it is OK to leave the failed stat in situ when you fit the in-line one..

Apparently, when these cool running stats are examined, they are always closed. This means the valve works OK otherwise the engine would overheat. But as it warms, the valve opens too early and so coolant is flowing through the system before it gets hot enough. This leads to typical running temperatures of anything between 60 and 80C. By inserting a second in-line stat the flow to the radiator is halted until that stat lets it through. These stats are from different manufacturers and seem more reliable. There are two approaches to do this fix. One involves inserting a demountable aluminium housing in the upper hose. The easier way is the in-hose method, which seems favoured by the likes of Renault. This doesn't require cutting the hose, so is in effect, reversible and considerably cheaper. Both methods work. Raising the running temperature to 90C and above not only makes the heater more effective, (but reportedly improves fuel consumption.)

Hi T-Cut
Most informative thank you i wonder if this is reson my mpg is on the low side on a round trip to the BMC recently 202 miles it cost me £39 in diesel that sort of works out at 25 miles to the gallon, all other reason i think i have covered clean ERG,PCV new, new pollen filter, oil filter, air filter, fan works, intercooler O-rings viton, i would have thought it would have cost me about £25 for that sort of journey Arctic.

Impossible to tell why that is, but if you check the running temperature using Diagnostic Mode it could be imformative. At least one member gained 15% mpg after raising the temperature by fitting an in-line stat.

I'm slightly confused which stat i should be ordering for the inline replacement.

I've seen mention of a QH205..?
and now the gates one tooo?

which should i be ordering, and which is most likely to be available at a local motor factors, as i would like to fit one on monday before i do a 300 mile run on tuesday.
Looking for a touch more economy ideally.

thanks

hi Steve, The narrow copper end points to the engine, insert the silver end into the pipe were you cut off the metal band. Have you got a large hose clip to replace the band before you start?
