Or follow the youtube link, have a look at the one you've got. If still serviceable buy new brushes from the other link and save yourself a lot of money. My rebrushed fan is still working after 6 years, another poster SD1 too has got 7 years out of his - your choice.

Hi Vitesse,
many thanks for the link, will take a look at it first, and if can get away with replacing brushes I will do? Many thanks Maurice |

Yes it's almost certainly going to be one worn brush no longer making contact with the motor's commutator. See post no. 20 for the best place to buy a set (you'll find some of the others have shortened too). They're about £20 and were commissioned specifically for our cars. Unfortunately Arctic's excellent pictorial guides in this thread have been sabotaged by TinyPic but hopefully he'll notice your plea and re-post them for you. So long as your diesel doesn't reach a coolant temperature of 100 degrees (you can monitor that using the IPK diagnostics) and you don't use the air conditioning then yes, you can use the car. Simon

Good luck with brushes.
Beware most on sale are made of chocolate. Only a small minority of rebrushing works according to owners who end up ordering our ultra reliable Revotec Kit

Small minority? I've opened about eight fan motors and brought five back to life, not a bad average. But if the motor is too far gone the poster has the option of the new eBay ones which are plug & play and require no modification. Regards |

They are Mike. I provided Engineering Carbon Products Ltd. with a sample brush from my own motor. They analysed the material and provide an exact copy (though more durable we hope) even down to the curvature on the contact surface.
The occasions when re-brushing is unsuccessful are when the owner has continued to use the car after the low speed has failed. The rotation of the armature then extracts the remains of the brush at high speed and damage to the commutator results. This will be obvious once the motor end cap has been removed and, as Jules says, a replacement system will then be necessary. Simon
