Got XBMC to work, called Raspbc, see here
http://www.raspbmc.com/about/
follow the instructions and easy to set up

Thing is if you run Raspbc you cannot run anything else because it runs on a separate card, so its standalone, so no internet and other apps etc

maybe there is a way of having both on one sd card as i'm only discovering this myself, but i don't think you can

1080p playing back a bit pixaleted on Raspbc, i'll have a look at VLC also

Latest OS seem to be Debian Wheezy and even better(maybe) is Raspbian

http://www.raspbian.org/

Bit of a shame as I paid for squeeze to be installed on the SD card but I think it was only £5

I have used XBMC on another linux machine although that is running Mint and is a lot more powerfull than the Pi. It does seem as is Raspbian will be able to run XBMC but it is early days. http://www.raspbian.org/RaspbianXBMC Although XBMC looks nice and is flashy I'm sure Raspbian will have a couple packages that will act as media players. I see Raspian will come with 34,000 packages available for download.

This is making me hungry.

Edit: I now have a case but no Pi.

Well what a pillock I am. I wa convinced my latest monitor had HDMI input-- It has not. Oh well I have some old monitors and an old tv something will have HDMI or RCA -- they don't. I have now ordered a HDMI to DVI lead.

I was convinced I had a USB keyboard too. I haven't, so I had to order one of those

After much playing around and loading different OS I don't think the Pi will be up to being a media centre in the car.

I tried Squeeze Wheezy and Rasbian. and Rasbian+Mate.

I see the official site now recomends Rasbian Wheezy and that is what I ended up with. I managed to get VLC on it but it just wouldn't play video although it was obviously trying. I mounted a USB stick with some effort but it would not play from there either. This coupled with the long winded mounting of USB sticks and pedestrian web browsing make it a non starter really. Oh well it kept me amused for a while. I did get it to view photographs.

So it looks like a digital tv box in the boot and and my netbook in the glove box.

On another note, I had to use the monitor from my main PC on the Pi, this meant for every day use I had to use an old pentium 4 machine loaded with the Mint (Maya) flavour of Linux. It was a delight, I'd recommend it to anyone.
