I will post a considered reply Geoffrey when I have more time as I am stuck at work until Friday night....in the meantime...one noticeable reason for the fact that grammatical rules were not 'sticking' with students was because it was only really the English, Languages and History Dept that demanded that they get these things right....I fear that for too many teachers educated in the 70's their own lack of grounding made it difficult to comment on the students, often poor, compositions!
