Need a convincing reason for the wife to upgrade!
Having a chat to my wife about my plans to upgrading from a 20D to a 40D on my Birthday this month, she just said “do you really need to”? She also stumped me by saying “will your photos be any better with a new camera? As what you take now look OK to me”!
I must confess I’m finding it hard to convince myself now let alone her for a legitimate reason for the upgrade, especially as most of my best work is done PP in CS3. Or is it just that dreaded disease upgradeitus that all we hobby photographers suffer from? |

Peter Especially as prices tend to go down, do the upgrade when really needed and spend the saved money on other lovely things instead.

There is no legitimate reason to upgrade, but since when do us blokes need a legitimate reason to spend money on gadgets etc
At the end of the day the photographer takes the pictures not the camera. But will the new camera make taking those pictures more enjoyable - which at the end of the day is why we do it. I say go for it, you won't be happy until you do |

My mate has just upgraded his 350D to a brand new shiny 40D. Is it worth it? Most definately yes. Can you justify it? Most definately yes.
But just don't tell me 'cos I'll be jealous.... |

With my wife owning a 400D and myself a 30D, I would say going from 350/400 to 20/30/40 would be a good upgrade. However will you see much improvement going from 20D to 40D? As your wife says not much wrong with your photos at the moment! Maybe a better option would be to look at a new lens.
On the other hand you have probably taken an enormous number of photos on your 20D so maybe you are getting towards the 100,000 mark and a new shutter may be looming? Then it may be time to upgrade. |

I would say yes go for it, this is what I would say to my wife...
I can Part exchange the 20, that will save a few hundred pounds. It uses the same batteries It uses the same CF Cards It has a dust remover, so less chance of damaging the mirror when changing lenses But the clincher would be.... (in my case any way) when the children (Grandchildren) are running around it will be able to take upto 75 pictures in just over 11 seconds, and as you know the best pictures are always the natural non posed type. |

Finally bitten the bullet and bought a 40D, got it from Jessop’s at Bluewater, they price matched it to Park Cameras £499.99 after cash back plus a free Lowpro camera bag.
What fantastic value, back in April 2006 my EOS 20D cost me £801.00 with the lens kit. Just waiting for the weather to clear up so I can go out and have a play! |
