Default Mk4 sat nav drive upgrade

I'm looking around for one of these and found a unit listed as off an X3/5 or E53?
The advert states that it might need coding, does anyone know if this is a fact, I would have thought they were dumb/generic drive units but I'm no expert. It could be '08 date coded if that makes any difference and in the pics it looks just like all the others on the bay that state "..suitable of E39 etc..."
Anyone has the knowledge who can give a quick guide....and, whilst your at trying to remember any idea approx. year/date code the V32 firmwear was introduced/issued for the Mk4

The Mk4 is fitted to most BMWs so X5/E39/E46 etc will all be the same.

I know there are various versions of software which give different functionality, they will also have a BMW 'splash screen' (one which displays when the unit powers up) but I believe that these can be changed. Mine already had a MG one fitted, although I think it has v28 software, where as v32 is the most up to date.
