Default Cold Winter Mornings

Im going to try something this morning but wondered if any of you guys already know the answer to this.
Picture this......Bedside alarm goes off at 5am. Time for work. Looking outside its freezing. Windscreen frozen up. Inside of your car is colder than your household freezer. You go out to your car and start the engine to warm your car up. You go back inside for 10 minutes as its too cold to stand outside. Finish drinking your coffee, then back outside to a nicely warmed up car. OMG.....where's the car!
Some thieving b#€?$¥#} has nicked it. This hasn't happened to me BTW but I remember many years ago, a mate of mine suffered this.
What I'm going to try is this.....Start up the car and leave engine running with key in ignition. Using my spare key, shut and lock doors. Will it work?
Now, I know that diesel owners amongst you have the option of a fuel burning heater to get your cars warmed up but is there any after market alternative for the petrol heads amongst us?
Looking forward to your replies
Steve

Petrol FBH is just what I will put in my 2.5 Rover in next 2-3 weeks.

I will be putting Webasto Thermo Top E and it will cost me around 800 EUR with 2 years warranty.

I will try to make some pics during installation but I don't know if garage will allow me to do so.

Looks like you get up the same time as me Why not just buy some well fitted leather gloves, a flat cap and not bother?

I can understand doing this when it's brass monkeys, but for English winters? What's the absolute most it will go down to? -10C?

I believe there's an option called bathrobe mode or towel mode or something like that which allows the car to be locked with a spare key whilst the engine is running to help it warm up quick. Although i must admit warming up the v6 has never been an issue for me so far.

Steve,

Leaving a cold engine idling like this accelerates engine wear. Car manufacturers always recommend that windows are cleared manually before the engine is started and that the car should then be driven away immediately. This is because an engine under load reaches operating temperature much more quickly.
