New clutch, worse problems
Arrrgg, Having spent 2 days over the weekend replacing the clutch due to slippage and hard gear changes when warm, I'm now in a worse position than before!
We did the clutch and slave and everything seemed to be fine until yesterday when on the drive home the gear change was becoming harder and harder to get in and evetually when i tried to reverse onto my drive all I got was a grindy crunching noise. The biting point now seems lower than I can push the pedal so obviously something is amiss. I'm hoping it's just air that we trapped in the system when doing it but i'm wondering if it would take 2 days for it to show up from when the slave and clutch were fitted or has something sprung a leak somewhere (i'm really hoping not) Also everything that refers to bleeding the system just says "fluid" not what type of fluid, i'm assuming it's Dot4 brake fluid? |

the recommended fluid is dot3 but i used dot4 not alot different . check your master for leaks if not bleed system again you might have air present and before doing nipple up keep ur foot on the pedal

Normally, when you replace slave and master,no bleeding is needed.
quick fit connector and forget ... Lot of people having only replaced the slave, got all sort of problems... Last edited by FrenchMike; 3rd April 2013 at 10:22.. |

You don't say you changed the Master cylinder so its worth checking whether that is leaking.

You replaced the Slave but did you replace the Master aswell as you didn't mention this ?
If not, this may be where your problem is as one usually follows the other ! Try bleeding again first though. |

Thanks for the replies. I have checked the master over and there didn't seem to be any fluid leaking, but when I (eventually) opened it i found it was full of very dark liquid so it looks like it might be on the way out. Money is very tight at the moment so I was hoping that I could do without changing the master but seems it's not to be and I might have cost myself more in the long run.
I've now finally managed to bleed the system and run about 200ml through until the liquid was coming out the same colour as it went in. Hopefully i've flushed it through enough and the old stuff that was in there isn't now sitting around the new slave and degrading that. |

Well drove to work this morning (35miles) and the gears crunched again by the time I got here. So car seems fine when cold but crunching when warm.
Biting point is near the floor and I can't find any leak so either air got in the sytem again when bleeding it or possbile master gone up the wall and letting fluid through the piston but not externally leaking? (i assume it has some form of piston?) When we did the clutch change we noticed the flywheel didn't seem to have any movement in and out, the tollerance on rotation was around 20mm. Should there be any in/out movement? Last edited by bubs; 4th April 2013 at 07:01.. |
