Default 1936 Nimbus Motorcycle

I have had a request to take a 1936 Nimbus motorcycle overland from Northern Europe to Pretoria in South Africa. What a lucky guy I am. Any advice welcomed

Avoid large deep areas of water would be one thing and learn to ride it first very different from modern machines. Message ends 08.53 GMT

Come to think of it, have just remembered that Colvert still rides a motorbike and he could be up for it if he was interested. Thanks Mike for your thoughts I think I might fall off.

Watch "The Long Way Down" as many times as you need to, to convince yourself not to.
(Shouldn't need to more than once.)

To drive London to the Cape takes about 3-4 weeks if nothing goes wrong. On second thoughts it will be easier to crate the bike up and export it that way, it should arrive in one piece The route through the med would be okay to Alexandria but from there the rest would be quite a test. Crossing the borders and regulations. I had a friend who did it last year in the Endurance Rally - he came 5th and he said it was hell going through Ethiopia, all the cars were stoned and abused by the villagers..... To name just one of the countries along the way

Default Still Worth Doing

- Watching the Long Way Down, that is.
John o' Groats to Cape Town with Charley Boorman & Ewan McGregor.

If you really want to experience a motorcycle adventure in Africa, in relative safety, with back-up and modern equipment, you could try this with Charley Boorman, August - October 2014:-

Cape Town - Victoria Falls and back, or a section of it.

My first bike, which came in three cardboard boxes, was a 1937 250cc BSA. ( The previous owner took it apart but couldn't put it back together again. )

The bike you mention would not be tempting cos it's much too slow for me nowadays.
I'd need one like the one I have in the pic below. Something than could outrun any thrown rocks.

I agree Phil It is pure bike porn
I would crate it up but don't know much about all the hastles involved. Being an old classic you would spend more time getting off to fix it to ride it direct and what if your in the middle of nowhere and need a specific part

Pay no attention to the advice above. Instead, read Jupiter's Travels by Ted Simon and convince yourself to do it. CLicky Link

Do it.
Enjoy it.
Take Pics.
Tell us all about it.
