mg zt 1.8 petrol turbo blown

As it says in title turbo has blown I've been quoted £810 to have it replaced...but don't want to pay that kinda money. I had the HG replaced in oct 2009 and thank god thats ok..but now i don't know what to do...put a recon part in it looking at £550 does anyone else know of where I can get mine reconditioned. I'm a ldy driver so don't know anything about cars so please help!!!! Am in bradford if that helps...

Thats not to bad a price really, new from rimmers bros is £1100 plus postage,reconditioned is about £500, second hand don´t bother. search the web for garrett GT2052LS and they will show up,mine was leaking coolant and couldn´t find it for the life of me,in the end it was the turbo, they have a little chamber on the exhaust side that collected the coolant and with the temps that they get to just evapourates....good luck...

A friend of mine with a shogun dealt with these guys, I know he said they save him thousands, he still has the car.

A quick search of the web shows that a recon turbo will be around £500, (presumably service exchange), then you have to have it fitted which should not take too long, say 3 hours at around £45 per hour, so you would be looking at £500 + 135 = 635 plus VAT @17.5% so the final bill would be around £746. So your £810 is a believable amount, as the labour cost may be more than I have anticipated.

Trouble is, Nasxtra, the cars get cheaper to buy compared to new as they age and depreciate, but the parts and service does not.

If you do decide to get it fixed, always let the car idle for one or two minutes after stopping from a long fast run to let the turbo cool down, it will then (or should) last longer. This is not necessary for town or short journeys, of course.

Sorry to go off topic but it dosen't seem possible to pm/email you.

I also have a leak which is prooving dificult to trace.

Did the coolant just drip off the turbo on cooling or did it spray onto the block and run down?Dripping off sump bolts,exhaust pipe etc.Or was there no visual trace of a leak?

The first sign is white stain marks around the nuts and flange on the exhaust side, it only leaked when hot, take the hose of the intake side of the turbo and check inside, there will be oil and water..the water can also enter the oil here and end up in top cover mking it look like the headgasket has gone, i have a photo somewhere with one that had completly destroyed everything..

Mine only leaks as the car cools down overnight so i wouldn't think it's that.

Without stating the obvious regarding peformance, what are the signs that the Turbo has gone???...I am more of a River Cottage style expert, mind you I would not eat the soles of my shoes which I am sure Hugh would

Why not give M&G (MGR specialists) at the bottom of Wakefield Rd in Bradford a call 01274 722533 Personally I can recommend them and Wayne may have some suggestions.

thanks for the advice After the HGF and now the turbo going feeling like a money pit now...what do you guys reckon....scrap the car or get it repaired and sell it or keep it?? i like the car but can't afford to keep on forking out money on it. Is it likley to have something else go wrong with it soon??
