I'd also be worried why it's more worn on one side than the other, suggests that one side of the calliper has been doing more work.

Which brings us nicely on to the discussions about "dodgy" MoT tests.......

This makes interesting reading on the .gov website:

https://www.gov.uk/government/upload...ts.csv/preview

Note that in 2016-17:

There were 65,532 testers

About 150 testers were disqualified which is less than 1/4 of one percent of the total number.

However, there is one figure which is noticeable by its absence - the number of testers, tested. IMHO without this figure it's virtually impossible to come to any sort of sensible conclusions.

If they tested 1500 people that would be a 10% disqualification rate which paints a vastly different picture of competence/compliance from a 1/4 of one percent.

And for cars the top 3 failures in 2016-17 were:

Lighting & signaling approx 18%
Suspension approx 12%
Brakes approx 10%

Looking forward to hearing the experiences of those on here who are directly involved in the MoT process. Is it a bit like OFSTED in the teaching world?

Andy.

My tester says that so long as the brakes still perform as they should... and are not corroded..... that's a pass.

The thickness of discs is not examined AFAIK

That should have been replaced along time ago, so why, as the owner, did you not replace it sooner?
An MOT is not a substitute for good maintenance and servicing, it is carried out to the minimum standards and could only be failed if obviously worn and as that is on the inner face it would be extremely difficult to see and even then who am i to say its below minimum thickness? I cant measure them!

Also, AndyNO1, ANY car that comes in for a MOT could possibly be a DVSA "plant" car, DVSA observe testers without them even knowing, its a bit sneaky and if you find all there "faults" you will never know they have visited, however if you miss "major" items they will make themselves known and you will be disciplined with points on your "tester license".

My mate who runs a workshop specialising in vans had a driver come in complaining the brake pedal was pulsing on his Transit, when the wheel was removed one side of the disc had worn through to the vents in the disc.

As has been said there is no minimum thickness for discs just corrosion and cracking, the manufacturers are the ones who state the minimum thickness.
