Problems with fan

Hi Guys

On my 52 petrol 2.5 V6 Connie, it looks like my slow speed fan has gone, having tried and failed the ECON/Demist test.

As most of my driving is short daily trips to work I set up the IPK to monitor the temp ( setting 7.0) and did the trip today, and it never went above 92 so the first question is, is this well within the temp threshold of the engine?

If it is then it looks like there has probably been no heat damage and Ill be ceasing driving until its fixed.

That brings me onto my other question...

I also have an 05 petrol V6 connie (now a project and donor car) which had a replacement fan fitted last year ( with the help of Arctic) so naturally I thought I could cannibalise the relevant parts but once again the ECON/Demist test couldn't kick in the slow speed fan.

So am I unlucky with both fans going at the same time or am I doing something wrong with the test?

Hello Paul. The 'official normal' range as defined by the MGR temperature gauge is 75-115C. Clearly one end is too low and the other too high, but the generally accepted running range for petrol engines is in the mid 90s C. The standard thermostat's opening point is about 88C. On the move, engine cooling fans are generally not required, but in slow or stationary traffic the fan is definitely needed

if the engine has never exceeded 115C, it's unlikly that you have anything to worry about. Coolant inventory must be checked frequently.

That's unsual, an 05 model would typically have the later 2-speed fan system. The weakness here is the low speed resistor, but that's easily resolved. So yours needed a fan replacement? Is it a 2-speed (resistor present behind the fan blades at 2 o'clock position)?

Dunno. Assuming the aircon is in operable condition and with cool engine on tickover, and climate set at Econ, press the Demist button. The radiator fan should start and run coninuously.

Thanks for responding, yep I've tried the ECON/Demist test exactly as you say on both cars and neither fan kicks in.

The 52 Connie has a three speed (no resistor) whilst the 05 Connie is two speed (gold resistor)

Its just seems odd for both fans to pack up at the same time especially on two different systems... guess I'm just unlucky

Anyhting is possible but let's explore this a bit further. The petrol engines need to be running for the demist test but you've confirmed that this was the case.

When you drove to work today, did you use the air conditioning? Did the cool air output become warm when you were stationary?

Yep i did use the A/C on the way back but didn't notice it become warm when i was stood still, but tbf I switched it off straight away.

I've just ran the car in the drive for a few minutes and the AC seems fine
