Most likely I think is the thermostat housing and/or adjoining pipes.

Take off engine cover and check in 'V' between cylinders for red coolant staining.

HGF comes at the very bottom of the list for KV6 cooling problems. Can happen of course like on any engine but pretty rare on KV6.

It is liners that leak. And, yes, you can have, and most likely do have, a leaking thermostat housing.

See why you loose water:

See whats up with your thermostat:

Only now realize you say it is the radiator cap with mayo. That indicates oil in the water. To be sure of the liners it should be the oil filler cap, which would be water in the oil.

Anyhow, enjoy reading. The stuff is certainly worth knowing, if you want to keep the car.

Sounds very odd. Here's the Rimmer diagrams for all the bits. You should be able to fathom it from these:

A couple of long shots.
1. HGF
2. Elevated oil level
3. Auto trans water/oil heat exchanger
4. Bearing in water pump (this is a really looooong shot!!)
5. Crack in block
6. Failed inlet manifold gasket

I am sure there are another couple of possibilities, but darn if I can think of them at the moment.

I would check the water pump for a leak as well. You would be able to pick up stains behind the left front wheel at the bottom of the plastic cambelt cover.

You can have a fault where the pump leaks only while standing still, or one which only leaks while driving! I have had both. So to say these pumps are strong would be to really really be an optimist!

You realize that a leaking thermostat will not explain why you have oil in the water.
But, apart from that, try this for size:

Haynes:
Inlet manifold to head: 25Nm = 18 lbf ft
Inlet manifold upper section bolts: 18Nm = 13 lbf ft

New gasket, new seals, new O-rings required.

Not an expert but 25Nm is NOT finger tight and there is coolant flowing through the manifold so you might be on to something.

Question: Given the KV6 is known for airlocks is it likely the extra coolant was needed due to airlocks/settling and would you learn-ed people expect it to settle down now?[/QUOTE]

Yes, i have had to top up a couple of times since last doing my last stat, no more then a litre. Also done this on other cars where i have replaced coolant. Did you follow the haynes guide for refilling coolant etc?

Try the water pump, remove the engine undertray, leave to stand overnight, check next morning and if you have coolant running down to the sump then get the water pump checked.
