running cold

Hi Everyone, My 190 has started to run cold, the temp gauge works as does the heater, the running engine temp is only around 45-50 even on a run. the engine seems to be on auto choke, i.e. slightly higher idling speed and therefore is using more fuel. also the cooling fans are on all the time. can anyone suggest the cause.

Do you have climate control fitted? Is it set to econ?

Could be a stuck thermostat or faulty temperature sensor?

Hi Mike,

Typhoon190 may well be right by suspecting a faulty temperature sender but I'd just like to check a couple of things with you first.

You say that the temperature gauge "works". What is the reading? Is the pointer below the "normal" nine o'clock position?
Are you using the built-in instrument pack diagnostics (test 7.0) to obtain the digital coolant temperature reading?

hi Simon, the gauge is now only just registering 8-35 clockwise.As for the 'built-in instrument pack diagnostics (test 7.0) unfortunately I don't know how or what that is. someone I know had some laser gadget to get a reading of engine temp.

You may need to practice the button press rate. The important thing is to start it instantly the required screen appears. If it keeps reverting back to the default display (mileage, ambient temp, etc) try again. When you get the knack, it's dead easy. Once into the routine, select the required 'Test' number using a half-second press rate and stop. If you overshoot, keep going until it cycles back to the start and then on to where you want to be.

For engine running temperature, button press to Test 7.

If the heater is hot then the engine is not running cold.

Seems to be the gauges that are giving you wrong information.
