if the cams are getting replaced then I think you'll need to check if cam locking tools are required to complete that job. The chain sprockets do not have keys or splines but are held in position by their bolts iirc. It is torqued up first to (I can't remember then plus and angle ) - buts its pretty tight.
Similar modus operandi to the bottom pulley on teh 75 diesel and we've read aplenty on here how tight that bolt is.

I had a very close call with a V6 (3 litre) Omega I used to have. Set off from home one day and by the time I got to the end of the road there was a naff, hot rubber smell permeating the cabin, turned round, back home and called the AA. It was taken to a local garage where I'd bought it. Got a call from the mechanic who was the previous owner, the cambelt tensioner had disintegrated but thankfully no other damage done.

The best thing to do if you have to take your car in for servicing, is to mark items that are going to be changed. Oil filters, metal ones, can just be marked with a sharp point, metal nail, somewhere on the side of the filter. If you see it is still there when it has been changed? You know it has not. Likewise with anything else that is going to be opened, taken off or replaced. Five minutes is all it takes. Then when you query them, they have not got a spanner to fit the excuse, not even an adjustable one. It is an old trading standard trap.

Paul.
Very likely to be a failing seal. The Vauxhall and Insignia forums have plenty of instances. It seems that some have drilled and ground the bell housings/gearboxes to give access to two sump bolts, which have to be removed to remove the sump. Otherwise, you have to remove/withdraw the gearbox to get to them. The seal shrinks in the colder weather, so the problem is worse then. As the oil pump is trying to suck the oil from the sump, it sucks air instead, giving the low oil pressure signal. This could lead to dry bearings at start up.

The real give away was that the oil level was exactly the same as when I had left it there earlier that day and the car still parked exactly where I had left it.
I Remember putting my midget in for its second service, I had marked the points, plugs, oil filter and some other bits. When I went back for the car I was given my bill which I paid then asked the service manager to show me what had been done. He could not get the car into reverse to back it out the parking space. I showed him the marked parts that they had charged me for changing and asked why the car had clocked up 79 miles since I had dropped it off that morning.
There was much mumbling I suggested that they had damaged the gearbox when they had being having their jollies. The upshot was I got a new gearbox and clutch fitted and the service was also carried out. I was not charged any more money, the clutch being thrown in in the way of an apology for them damaging the gearbox and failing to carry out my service.
It was a main dealer which I have never used since. Very sad memory of a nice wee car which I kept for over thirty years. Had to give it up when I could no longer get out of her. She aged better than me.

To be honest, by the chain, cams, gaskets etc will have been bought it is cheaper for them to pay me put a second hand engine in, which is what they wanted to proceed with, £150 engine and £125 labour. It will be in and running in an afternoon.

I'm sure a £150 engine will not be up to much either!

My friend owns a scrap yard I get it alot cheaper. 66,000 miles with full history and a recent chain. I wouldn't of put a ropey one in, I know the guy very well.
