Ok, thanks Steve.

* There's a rectangular metal protrusion on the back of the barrel that locates in this hole. When you turn the key the protrusion turns the hole and that's what operates the switch to start the engine.

The barrel is now dangling from the column by two orange transponder wires ............

Some pics to illustrate the above.

This one shows the rectangular recess/hole surrounded by the spring-loaded ring (para 1 above).

Closer. There's a lot of grease in there - nothing to do with me.

This is the rear of the barrel - the rectangular metal protrusion goes into the hole above (para 2) and turns as the key is turned.

Barrel side.

Barrel - other side.

Barrel front - the key entry cover isn't there. Hmm.

Close-up. Those two chunks of metal are the key guides (I think). The wet stuff is 'cos I just gave it a good dollop of WD40 and it's mixed with the graphite stuff that was already there.

Apart from the fact that the key entry cover seems to have vanished I can't see anything amiss from these pics.

Thumbs down More money!

That's torn it.

This happened as soon as I tried to prise it off the barrel.

An intact plastic ring has three tabs that need to be lifted at the same time to release it from the lip on the metal barrel. They wouldn't budge on mine using a fingernail so I eased a small flat-bladed screwdriver under one of them and .... Ping! .... off it flew.

And the barrel still doesn't have a key entry cover.

Simon photo 1 & 2 seem to show something in the key slot ? now you have it free from the steering column will the key go in and turn ?

I don't think there's anything untoward in the key slot. The only things I can see are these two key guides.

Yes, the key will go into the barrel and turn.

Btw, I've unclipped the white 'plunger' thing below - I think it's what pushes the spring loaded steering lock ring in and out (post 25 refers).

Or..... the ramp-shaped metal bits on the back of the barrel push the steering lock ring in & out - and the white plunger thing is part of the transponder system.

Question Slot cover (dust guard)

If it is, where does it go when the key is inserted?

It used to be there on mine, but it's not now:

I've shaken the barrel, whacked it and tapped it from all angles and it doesn't reappear. If it had broken off it would either jam the key entry or it would be in the driver's footwell.

So where the heck has it gone?

I'm getting nowhere with this.

What's the trick to getting the pesky barrel back into the pesky steering column?

1) Does this sprung-loaded arm have to be in the retracted (Arm in) position for the barrel to be inserted into the column?

2) Does this white plastic plunger have to be retracted into the barrel or not?

3) Does the transponder ring have to be in a set position relative to the steering column - e.g. does the plastic connector have to be between the metal lugs A and B?

The white plunger.......steering lock anyone??

The only thing to have anything to do with the transponder is the receiver ring

By the way, as one of the lugs has broken off, you can find a new one HERE

Yes, I know about YWD100041 - XPart have got them as well as replacement barrels (£10.54 and £91.59 respectively). Before chucking away another £91.59 I'm trying to find out if the existing barrel is actually faulty - and I can't do that because the darned thing won't go back into the column (probably because I'm not lining something up correctly).

This car is pushing it to the limit and the scrapheap is beckoning.
