Well , that didn't help !
The noise really does sound to be coming from under the dash

My 1.8 Connie used to growl when the aircon was switched on. After a regas it was fine. Quiet and efficient. My aircon man tells me that they all lose a percentage each year, so I get my latest car done every two years. The refrigerant has something in it which refreshes the seals. I have had one seal that needed replacing (bottom hose connection) but that is all. Car was an 05 with 80k on it.

Which is where the TXV I mentioned in Post 2 is located. Apart from the oft-discussed whooping noise, they also growl with a pitch that varyies with the engine revs. In all probability, it will disappear if you have aicon serviced

My percentage must be still there. Original gas from 17 years ago and still works perfectly.---But of course your man said---They all do that Sir.--------------------

( Now where have I seen that before ? )--

Mine grumbles when the A/C is engaged.
It seems to be coming from the clutch on the compressor,
but the A/C works well so I am ignoring it for now.

Question...Do you have to remove the bumper and radiator to get
the compressor out? It's pretty tight down there! (V6)

I will remove the bumper if I have to take off my compressor . As you say , it's very tight down there and the bumper comes off easily , so why not ?
It's that damned oil cooler that's in the way !

Do Not try and remove the bib screws on the lower edge of the bumper, leave them well alone and undo the 4 under tray screws instead.

9 x cross head screws across the top of the slam panel.
2 x 10 mm screws in the leading edge of the wheel arch.
2 x self tappers on the return edge of the wheel arch liner.
4 x 1/4 turn fixings on the under tray.
6 x self tappers on the two triangular brake ducts.

A sharp tug on each side to unclip the bumper from the wing.

Then unplug the indicator - fog light loom on the nearside chassis leg.
Unclip the power wash hose (if fitted) on the off side.

had a similar situation recently where aircon worked but everytime i switched it on a loud pulley noise would start.
Mechanic reckoned it was the compressor bearing , changed that and noise was still there.
Turned out to be crankshaft pulley was slipping when put under load.
Been told by a aircon guy Denso compressors very rarely fail.

Yes mine was not working finally, but before it stopped working, there was something peculiar with it. Jules had previously changed a clutch on the compressor, saying he couldnt see why it had failed. It lasted about a year after that before it seized, and the noise was then very loud at that point.

Jules did the belts for me on my 198k miler. My air con was still working, but the condenser was bald of fins, so i asked him to do a full service, and he said the gas had reduced to the minimum and was quite surprised it had never been regassed in 19 years.
