Vent thing next to the steering wheel/console?

Ive often wondered what the small black grilled vent thing next to the steering wheel/console is, and whilst wiring in the new satnav I noticed it has a white tube going to it. Ive never noticed any air to blow through it..

Forgive me for being dense, but what is it?!

It very gently draws air in and measures the cabin air temperature, so as to control the warm /cold air mix to that set by your climate.

The big puzzle is how it manages to adjust the passenger and drivers side, with only one sensor.
