Aircon growling at me?

It always had the occasional whale noise. But today it started growling when the compressor kicks in, looking around it could be lack of oil in the mix, low gas pressure, or the compressor bearings...?

It's unlikely to be oil related or compressor bearings Tom. As you have a diesel engine, have a look at your crankshaft pulley. They have a habit of breaking up and causing a noise only when unable to cope with the additional load of the air conditioning compressor.

Also do the 'demist test' to check that your fan's slow speed is working.

The fan has been bugging me, it seems to be running very fast. Always runs with the demist, its an old three speed fan, but does seem a bit fast

demist test will only operate the fan on speed 1

on a diesel without the engine running key position 2

With the demist pressed its just on constantly regardless of the temperature outside or of the engine etc

Ive never heard it run at different speeds, when its on its quite a noise!

Are you absolutely certain that it's three speeds Tom? I have such a motor and my slow speed is difficult to hear from inside the car and a respectful hum from outside.

Some resistor two speed systems are rather noisy when running on the slow speed.

Definitely no resistor on the fan, saw one with a gold resister at the scrappy a few weeks ago and was tempted to take it..

A few owners have inexplicably found the resistor not mounted in the usual place but tucked out of sight behind the shroud.

If you perform the trinary switch test, that will trigger the higher fan speed. I'd be interested to know if it gets even louder when you do this.

Oh ill give that a go this weekend and see what happens -unfortunately the car is used from dawn until dark with winter here-
