It is an additional tax that all vehicles with a list price of more than £40k pay for the first five years after purchase. It stops after that.

Why? The VED was being primarily used to tax vehicles that generated CO2 - now with changed rating bands and an additional charge now for those diesel vehicles that produce over a certain amount of nitrogen oxide. This has not changed. No BEV is paying that.

That way all the more thirsty cars will be paying more tax, and all the more frugal cars will pay less.

Plus, if you only take your second or third car out at the weekend, you only pay for what you use.
I agree with all of that but the road hauliers would (probably) be paying a lot more - so goods in our shops would become more expensive for everyone.

Nothing to stop them being charged at the pumps, then uk.gov refunding them by way of a rebate, just as happens with the VAT system.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

Or just add a 13p VED supplement to the fuel.

How much tax does a delivery lorry get charged atm?

As said it can easily be reimbursed to those that need it.

It'll give all those redundant VED DVLA employees something to do

Unless driving a diesel then they would use red.

You may or may not be aware that having in the past been a bus operator, we received what was termed as 'Fuel Duty Rebate' on scheduled bus services, at the time that was around 40% of the cost of the diesel, so worthwhile.

I think the new VED system is actually quite well thought out and relatively simple.

We have to pay taxes in various forms in order to keep the country running. If you do not wish to pay the tax on a V6, it really means that you do not wish to drive a V6. It is a personal decision.

Where and how the taxes are used is a separate debate.

Comrade Mgaz - a point to note - pensioners are amongst the wealthiest group of citizens in terms of disposable income. So your argument is somewhat flawed. A question I would ask you is, why have a car if you hardly ever use it?

So all us pensioners are the problem then. We have to much money. Perhaps it’s because most of us worked for it, and fought for it, not like today’s lack lustre workers whose stock saying is’ well, what can we do’. Please don’t forget we have worked and saved, not borrowed and spent more than we earned. Don’t start me on this subject.

The only problem with paying VED at the pumps, the greedy burgers in government would have to wait for their money. That’s a no no. We are already a bankrupt country, so waiting for money means money would have to be borrowed.
