Just for anyone who may be browsing in the future to do this job - the space in there is really limited so I used the damaged bolt removers linked below - worth their weight in gold imo. Tapped the 13mm on the bottom bolt with a long extension bar and got one of my aviator spanners on it - bingo. I gave the caliper a few knocks up and down with a lump hammer to break the seal on the top bolt then put the same bolt remover on and got at it with a 19mm open ender. Couple of hits with the lump hammer and she was free. Need a vice to get the bolt out of the extractor due to the lip on the bolt - the kit comes with a bar to knock em out. Hope this helps someone in the future...

No bother Billy, be aware that you will need to cut one coil from the spring on most aftermarket offerings, otherwise they will become coilbound when you fit them

The original spring free length is 15.5mm and the aftermarket ones, 18.5 the pin length is the same however.

This applies to Pagid, Mintex, or Delphi branded items, the giveaway as to the unsuitable types are a 5mm hex hole in head of the pin rather than a No 2 Pozi.

It was for this reason I bought a SMN100290 hold down kit, and after comparing spring lengths, broke out the Dremel

Brilliant thanks Brian - this forum's worth it's weight in gold too 👍

The ones already in it have a hex and two springs ended up in the brake pad - possibly why?

When I tighten the nut am I just going flush with the bolt or is there some other nack to the tension?

Think I was definitely due new shoes like:

The rear brake shoe retaining pins are a very poor design as when the back plate corrodes, and they will corrode, the pins simply will not hold.

I used a long bolt with a flat head (you can machine the hex head if necessary) which passed through the original spring and through the back plate. You may need to drill the hole out.
Fit a nylon nut and small washer to the inner side of the back plate. Don’t tighten it up too much, just enough to allow the shoes to “float”

The alternative is to fit ones like this.......LINK

The pins poke through the backplate from the back, and secure using the spring and cup washer inside the brake drum............

Ideal for crusty backplates where the pin hole has enlarged with rust.

Hi Billy.
Are these to late for you now ?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/TRW-GS846...8AAOSwZGJc0VOr

And these are good to use if the pins have pulled through the back plate

Steve, I bought handbrake shoes from the seller you linked to last month, thinking they were selling Unipart bearing in mind they use the logo and the Unipart part numbers in their advert.

They list manufacturer as Apec, but what they sent were some no brand rubbish, badly packaged with big chunks missing from the friction materiel where the shoes had been clattering around inside the box.

I opted for TRW, so handbrake shoes can be found HERE
