The wiring diagram shows two supplies to the glow plug ECU:
  1. A direct battery feed via FL6 (100 amps) which is the brown/white wire. This will provide the heating current.
  2. A supply via the main relay and fuse 1 (15 amps) which is a red/white wire.

I took everything off to get to the plenum chamber.
Today I've been out and checked the relay next to the ecu. No sign of burning or melting, Although this was assessed by sight as I couldn't get it out of the box.
Cleaned up the plastic stuff and put everything back.
Put the battery back on, 12.83v.
Switched on, multi-meter dropped to 8.7v so new battery is required.
on idle voltage showed 11.11v.
Then she revved up and it went to 14. something.
I didn't get a proper reading for that cos my attention was diverted to blue smoke coming out from below the engine cover. Actually below the turbo inlet.
Smelled like burning plastic. Switched off immediately and there was a definite smell of burnt electrical wiring in the cabin

I've had enough. She's due her mot next month and I just haven't got the knowledge, time or money to sort out this latest problem.

I'm putting her on members car for sale for spares or repair.
Anyone interested send me a pm please.

In the Haynes manual it says to test the glow plugs with 12v. Maybe that's why the 'glow plugs on' message didn't come on then.
Anyway, it's on charge now so I'll try again tomorrow
Going out once a week to charge the battery will only discharge it.---

Go to the thread the---really-really useful-- section.----I've got several useful posts in there about batteries and how to look after them.

Right then, colour me officially baffled.
I've just been back out to Kim. I removed the engine cover and looked with a torch at where yesterdays smoke was coming from.
The only wiring in that area are the cables that connect to the starter motor.
So I turned her on, and looked for smoke.
There was no smoke, the revs didn't suddenly increase like they did yesterday, and I kept her running, smoke free, for 5 minutes.
I checked the battery and it showed 14.5v, so the alternator is working.
I'm stumped.
Unless..... the last time I checked the wiring to the starter motor I put copper slip on the ring connectors to aid connectivity. Could it have been that that was burning off? Does burning copper slip smell like plastic?
Anyway, whatever the problem was it may have very well sorted itself out.
I'm still wanting to pass her on so she'll remain on members cars for sale section.

I did that when I looked at the glow plug relay.
No blockage and no tide mark on the pollen filter.
The other drain in the wing next to the plenum chamber was getting gung around it, but wasn't blocked either.
But yesterday it seemed all back to normal.
It's a strange one.
