Default Drop Links.

Today i changed out the two front drop link, near side was a pain which i knew it would be as about three weeks ago i changed the Off side one before i went to Wales as it was knocking, that was easy to remove, why have i changed it because i did not like the boots on it.

So both removed and replaced, no room for a spanner to be used on the top nut

The saw did the job.

Dougie.

The magnetic reluctor had been worn down by contact with the corroded backplate - rust had lifted the inner surface.

Courtesy of French Mike you can check all the ABS sensors and magnetic reluctors in the wheel bearings using a voltmeter.
The signal voltage changes from 1.7V to 0.7V as each magnetic segment passes the sensor, so jack each wheel in turn and slowly rotate it marking the switch points on the tyre wall with chalk. You should end up with 48 chalk marks looking something like this:

I had the gaps in the same place each revolution so a damaged reluctor, and if it had been in random places I would have suspected the sensor.
Other common failure causes are cable damage to the sensors, flakes of corrosion interfering with the sensing, or corroded plug pins at the ABS modulator.
This was an off side rear wheel I did some time ago, and you can see the sensor was missing more than a few segments:

You connect the positive probe of the multimeter to the signal wire, and the negative to chassis earth:

I made up a cable from some old bell wire and a scrap ABS plug and socket to save pinning through the cable insulation. Here it is testing a hub prior to fitting:

Good skills, thank you. I'll happily check that out tomorrow having had another piece of learning squeezed into my brain!

Dougie.

As a quick check Dougie, if you drive the car at walking pace and gently apply the brakes, then if it is a failing magnetic reluctor the vibrating brake pedal should coincide with each wheel revolution.

Ah good one. I shall do this forthwith if not sooner. 👍

Dougie.

Thought it was about time to give the EGR a clean....

Not horrific but not great either.

After:

And yes, the little red cone is from a new drop link which is due to go on soon.

The inlet manifold was done as well but no pics of that I'm afraid.

Took the old girl in for his MOT today and she came out with a full green sheet!

That’s a clean pass!!!! Not one advisory!! Not bad for a 18 year old British car eh!!

All
My hard work over the last month has paid off then.

Just took the tank to have it's aircon looked at as it's never worked since I had the car.

Got some good luck this time - it was just empty. One refill and fifty quid later and it now blows nice cold air again.
