Like others have said my money would be on the condenser. Also got mine from Jules but you're need a vacuum pump, manifold set and refill cylinder to do it yourself.

No possibility I'll be doing this myself. I fill up the fuel tank by myself, and one or two other things. But that's it!

There are a couple of pipes in the engine bay you could look at that are an easy check:

2/ Sorry no pic atm, but, one of the solid aircon pipes rubs on the underside of the soundproofing under the bonnet.

Hi John,

This is the reason why I frequently advise members not to waste their time and money at fast-fit places.

What you need then is a mobile self-employed specialist equipped with the the knowledge and experience to test, diagnose and repair. A quick Google reveals the best example I've ever seen of this local to you in Norwich:

Drive Cool

Book him without delay!

Simon,

I have used him in the past and found him helpful. However he no-longer replies to txt/emails, hence why I ended up at Panks.

Another point is the hose rubs on the bend of the A/C pipe.

Not the A/C but take care of the power steering hose to it can rub on the compressor.

Ha! He's done a great job for me in the past, but I've been completely unable to contact him for the last year or so. He never picks up the phone and never replies to messages I leave on his answerphone. I had to give up in the end. Car is booked into Panks for a check on Thursday. I'm hoping it's something trivial like an O-ring which they can fix, but at least I should get a worthwhile diagnosis.

Thanks Steve and John for this useful feedback.

Just to equip you with some information prior to your visit, I've never had to replace a leaking air con. 'O' ring seal in 33 years. The special oil which should be added during recharging will lubricate the 'O' rings and counteract any shrinkage that has taken place and has allowed the refrigerant gas to escape. The air conditioning must be operated regularly, say a minimum of once a month all the year round, to maintain this protection.

Prior to recharging, your system should also have a vacuum held for 20 to 30 minutes which is said to allow the moisture stored in the drier to vapourise and be extracted.

Lastly, I've learnt from experience that holding a vacuum is not a reliable indicator that a system is free of leaks. A nitrogen test on my Citroën revealed a broken pipe connection after it had passed a vacuum test at a garage and subsequently lost its entire charge in 24 hours!

Let us know how you get on please John.

Simon

Unfortunately it has turned out to be one of the most expensive possible options. They've done some testing and found a leak in the compressor itself, so that's going to set me back just under £600 (with testing and labour costs).

Hi John.
That sound expensive, i presume it means after fitting another new compressor, testing it after and adding the gas it is guaranteed to be perfect yes, it's about 30 minutes to remove the compressor.
