Default Choosing a New Compressor [1.8 Non-Turbo]

Hello Chaps,

I've determined that my A/C compressor needs replacing and I'm looking around to buy it, Rimmer Bros do it at their usual liberal prices, I just wondered if any of the after-market ones are as good and are they a straight swap?

I have quite a few here in East Kent, I hadn't really considered second hand as I thought going to the effort of changing it, I'd rather know for certain it was in good order. I'll have a look around, maybe there will be some reconditioned.

We do have these available - but unfortunately they're quite expensive (although less than some other sources, admittedly).

Hello Hector,

From your June thread ...

You've explained this in TomTheTyke's thread ...

My suggestion is that you book a return visit by the mobile specialist who added the dye and see if his conclusion is the same as yours. Ideally the compressor casing should be cleaned of dye before the system is run again to discover exactly where the leak is. As the refrigerant is under high pressure, it's possible that the pinhole you've found is spraying the dye over a wide area and misleading you into thinking that the compressor is the culprit.

What you want to avoid under any circumstances is buying and fitting a new compressor then finding that it isn't responsible. Whatever the outcome, why not let the mobile specialist supply the parts and do the work for you?

Simon

Hello Simon,
I did call him out again, and he agreed with what I supposed it to be and when he went to discharge the system he said that there just wasn't any gas left. My radiator is leaking at the moment and I already have a new one to replace it with so I am going to kill two birds with one stone and replace both at the same time and then call him out again to do a recharge when fingers crossed it will be fixed! I've looked into the process and I believe I can do it, I'm replacing the dryer and auxilliary drivebelt at the same time as recommended and if there's any problem which I don't anticipate, I have a spare car I can drive while I wait for my A/C man to come out to give me a hand.

OK, thanks for the update Hector. Just one thing; if your 1.8 is anything like my V6, the drier is integral with the condenser which you've recently renewed anyway.

Yes I think it is. I thought about leaving it, as you say I've just had the condenser changed and I think I probably could do but since I'm exposing the system to the air again and I'm already spending a fair amount on parts, I just thought 'in for a penny, in for a pound.'

Thanks for you interest and helpful advice, I'll be sure to do an update to let you know how it goes!

Sometimes compressor warranty is void if you don't fit dryer
