Harry's link is still viable so l just ordered one of these Varta E44's, £90 now with next day delivery....ho hum.

The car was sitting outside the house for four months & l recently gave the battery a full charge which took a while, around thirty hours as l recall. After a trip to Kevin at Wickford, a couple of trips to work & one to Clacton with much use of the aircon, l started up on Monday but noticed the rather slower cranking, even more so on the return trip. Charging on the OBD showed 14.1 - 2 V. Took the battery off for trickle charging & thirty six hours later still no green light on the charger & a multimeter reading of 11.9 now fallen to 10.9. So having adopted the advice given to me years ago that messing with a duff battery is a fools errand, l've put my order in. I hope the lid goes on.

I'd say that you've made the right decision Gary. Your existing battery was most likely killed off by its four month lay-up without a maintenance charge. If you're in this situation again it's worth bringing the battery indoors and attaching it to a smart charger for the period. That way it can be saved as well as being ready for action at short notice.

Yes, you may be right there, Simon though the battery on my P5B lasted years with long lay-ups though l do have a battery cut-off switch fitted to her which probably helped not to mention the almost total lack of electrical systems compared to the 75.

The Varta is here & fitted with Steve's battery clamp fix carried out. I did measure it & it is about 189mm tall but this causes no issues with the lid as you can see. I would say it's the maximum size though as Harry first maintained:

I was surprised l didn't note the defunct Lion battery being first fitted in my service book but l think it would have been about three or four years ago.
