Hi Steve,

I am still only 25!

I was always taught to put either a spare wheel or blocks of wood under a car incase jacks failed. I do it even with axle stands so I am with MSS on this one. It is a just in case safety measure.

Thanks Arctic this is exactly what I wanted to hear - I was looking at the Halfords ones so it's good to know they've lasted a decade as with a lot of others people are commenting they've rusted after a month or the welds are sketchy or they don't actually believe they could support the stated weight etc. Wilko also have a set around the same price called Hilka but on Amazon the same ramps are badly reviewed.

I love the look of the ramps Pete mentioned but I imagine they're quite pricey. I looked at the basic bottle jacking ramps but I see a lot of those up for sale with repairs made. There are some fabulous looking contraptions on eBay everything from pneumatic scissor lifts to things that will spin the car up onto it's side but I'm at the £100-150 mark rather than £500-1000!

Thanks for all the comments!

My Halford ones date from the early 1970s, and have a lot of use in that time. Perfectly ok, though I've done one small mod. So that the bumper doesn't catch when driving on to them, I use a small block of wood to drive over first. I'll pop a pic up later.

Well, I just added a pair of ramps to my garage kit.

On my lunchtime walk around where we live, there at the bottom of someones drive was a lovely pair, in blue, of car ramps for the princely sum of ... well nothing, free

Now in my garage

You can further your safety by filling the gap below the where the wheel rest’s with wood. Simple to cut a piece(s) of wood to fit, and no chance of it collapsing while you are underneath the car.

No, he was there as I was phoning for someone to come and with a car to put them in to take home. He was explaining that he couldn't use them anymore as he changed his car to a Audi A4 soft-top and the front bumper was too low. This was where I completely forgot about the additional ramps you can get to solve the same problem I will have with the 75

I think I have a pair of caravan/motor-home ramps tucked away in the back of the garage

Default Some pictures...

of the items described in post #9 in use.

My one 3.6m sleeper gave me 9 of these 400mm blocks and it looks like I had bought two 4.8m lengths of the 50mm boards which were cut down to 400mm and 1000mm lengths. So more than enough to even have back-blocks under the car!
