Default Growling aircon

I've been living with a growling noise (not the whooping noise ) when I activate auto mode on my aircon . I have recently realised that when I activate the demist function whilst in econ mode , I do not get the growling noise .
Does this mean I can eliminate the compressor as a possible source of the noise , as I believe the compressor runs when in demist mode ? I have always believed the noise to be coming from the heater unit under the dash , but have not yet felt like dismantling it to have a proper look
Perhaps it's time .........

If the Econ light is on air con is off, Is the cooling fan working when the air con is on?

Hmmm, an interesting question Chris. The demist function sets the airflow to the screen and a very high blower speed whereas 'Auto' mode is likely to direct the air mainly to feet and face level vents with a lower blower speed. What that means in practice I'm not sure.
The compressor always runs in demist mode and the majority of the time in Auto mode as well; certainly at this time of year it will!

I'd be interested to know if you find anything.

Simon

When was the last time it was serviced?
My ZT190 was a bit 'grumbly' when the charge in the A/C circuit was low - a service sorted it (the gas is removed and replaced in the correct quantity)

Simon
So this is making me think that the compressor is not making the noise I can't hear any such noise from the compressor when I have the bonnet up and listen in the engine bay
