Default Graunch/crunch noise from front wheel

Hi.

Got a weird noise coming from passenger front wheel.

Started as a slight graunch/creak as the wheel was rotating turning to the right (wheel under load) in and out of gear.

It's steadily got worse and now is at the point where even if slightly off centre steering in either direction it's making the noise. Embarassing to drive as well as worrying but drives normally apart from this.

I had it in at garage and they said they could find nothing out of the ordinary so I've done my own investigation and have found the following:
  • movement of wheel when holding at 12 and 6, also can do same on hub with wheel off
  • no fouling of backing plate or anything stuck behind it
  • no splitting of CV boot but grease residue around it (looks new-ish)

Now normally I would think wheel bearing but the noise is not a rumble but a regular intermittant graunch/crunch with the wheel rotation which gets faster as speed increases.

Is it likely to be the wheel bearing? Has anybody else had anything similar?

Comments appreciated.

Thanks

Firstly i would have said cv joint with the crunching when turning, but think you may have identified the problem yourself with the movement when holding the wheel, surely the garage could have identified the problemi if you have considerable movement indicative of a wheel bearing,
I would strip and investigate further before driving again to be on the safe side.
Could be bearing at top of shocker.

Thanks for the info.

I did initially suspect the bearing but it isn't the classic rumble/groan and only does it under load/when driving.

As for top mount bearings, I've had this before and know the noise. There's no twang on the strut when moving the steering back and forth.

I've got a bearing on order and will get it replaced tout suite.

Just an update for anyone searching for this in future.

Issue diagnosed at another garage as OSF caliper sticking, recon caliper fitted, noise gone.

So spare bearing from DMGRS added to stock

Another update.

Noise is back...GRRR!

Going back to garage to find out why it wasn't fixed and why I got a new caliper on the other side from where the noise is coming from.

OK, got it in to garage today and three mechanics spent a good 30 mins looking it over.

They put it on the MOT test bay ramp so they could move steering and listen at same time.

Diagnosis: Driveshaft nut slightly loose
Cure: Nip up driveshaft nut
Result: no noise...

So if anyone gets this in future this may be the cause, especially if you've had a wheel bearing replaced in the recent past (3 months ago).

I'm rather curious, was the drive shaft not twanged with a hammer into the groove so it couldn't undo?
