Air Con Compressor Reconditioning
Afternoon all,
I had a very expensive trip to the garage Monday, I thought a belt tensioner was on its way out but it turned out to be a seized a/c compressor. After the cost of replacing the alternator & crankshaft pulley (it was in 2 pieces) I decided not to go for a new compressor. Does anyone know of a place that could recondition mine, of sell a reconditioned unit with a surcharge? I don't particularly want to pay in excess of £400 for a new one. Many thanks, Rob

For repair Rob you could try this company based near Southampton. They're not brilliant, taking two attempts to replace a shaft seal for me but their rate was reasonable.
A Google search should find you a reconditioned exchange unit or book a mobile specialist to source one for you and fit it. But before you do anything I'd urge you to be absolutely sure that the diagnosis is correct. A disintegrating crankshaft pulley on the diesel engine is often incorrectly attributed to the air conditioning compressor. Simon

Thanks Simon,
I trust thr mechanic, I have been using his serviced pretty much for as long as I've been driving. I didn't mean the crankshaft pulley was broken as a result of the compressor, just that he noticed it had disintegrated. I've actually got it in my shed, there is no rubber left holding the 2 sections together. I had noticed an issue the Wednesday before the Jubilee Bank holidays, firstly an awful grinding sound. Secondly, driving home I put the a/c on & the battery charge light came on followed by a loss of power steering. I'll have a look around for a recon unit, if the weather stays lime this I will certainly regret not having a/c!!
