Default New Motorways

I drove from Dunstable home to Sheffield on Friday. Total chaos. 3 1/2hr journey that usually tales 2 hrs. The problem was caused by 2 accidents closing 2 of the 4 lanes and 3 breakdowns causing lane blockage and tailbacks. I hope no-one was hurt in all of this. What was noticeable is that without a hard shoulder there was nowhere for the breakdowns to go. Coupled with that were drivers who ignored the lane closure signs and needed to come into the running lanes down the road away. So these new motorways are designed to move traffic faster and inevitably they do the opposite.

with some breakdowns drivers dont have the brains to drive to somewhere safe, punctures being one such breakdown.

I agree with your sentiment, no hard shoulder does not help and I feel makes motorways less safe.

Removal of the shoulder was a cost cutting exercise to avoid widening the carriageway. The money men in the Ministry eager to save a quid.

Write to your MP about it. I often write to Grant Shapps about the appalling waste and utter wrong decisions on HS2 and "Smart" motorway running. Now that he is putting himself in the race for "leader" I think I'll write to the local rag pointing these (his) failings out and how inappropriate it would be for an MP to cast their vote for him.
