Default Coolant temperature problems.

Rover 75 2002 2.5 v6 tourer 80000mls
I have had the thermostat replaced recently 30/06/22 as the old one blew apart whilst driving in Edinburgh.
Since the replacement thermostat fitted the dash temperature gauge sits at 7.00 o/clock. On starting the engine the trip temperature starts around 34 and rises to around 60-63. When in heavy traffic this rises to 75-80 and the dash gauge rises to dead middle. I am obviously worried about the fluctuations in the temperature and assume there is an airlock or could it be a faulty thermostat?
Any information appreciated.

Possibility of both - when the thermostat was fitted did they bleed and refill the coolant - the V6 has a very specific coolant procedure which if not followed will lead to airlocks. Are you losing any coolant.

I will try the heater.

Water level appears to stay ok.

I gave the repairer the sheet on refilling the system and assume they followed it! Will find out tomorrow.

If the level is OK that to me lessens the chance of an airlock -so as Dave suggests it may be a duff thermostat.

We have seen this a few times - it always seems to be a duff thermostat unfortunately.
If it was from us, drop me a PM or email and I'll swap it out for you.

There's no need to be James, it's normal for engines with electric cooling fans. However your temperatures are too low. When the car is in motion you should be seeing about 92˚ and in stationary traffic this should steadily rise to 100˚ when the fan should start running.

Hi James
How are you getting on, Think your best option is to get another thermostat from DMGRS and change it via the keyhole method

Ps I see you are quite a distance from me but will gladly do it for you if you fancy a drive down

Hi Simon, The engine used to run and the temp rise to 100 then the fan cut in
but since the thermostat broke up in stationary traffic a few weeks ago where I had to call the AA to recover the car, I have had the thermo replaced and hence these readings.

DMGRS have agreed to replace the thermo and I am also replacing the radiator cap, o rings and gaskets and these should arrive tomorrow so will update when work completed. I may add that after going for a drive yesterday the temp hovered around 64-66, I left the engine running whilst on the drive whilst I did some other checking and the temp rose to 75-80 and then steam started coming from the bottom area of the radiator directly below the expansion tank, but my garage now states they have done a pressure test and can only find the radiator cap leaking, so I am a wee bit confised as to what is going on with the motor. I just want it to run perfectly as it it is a lovely car and I do not want to scrap it. So I shall await the repair as see what transpires in the next day or two. Thanks

Hi Dave, I have just replied to Simon. Scott at DMGRS is sending another thermostat tomorrow so hopefully that should confirm where the problem lies. I am finding it a bit of a problem getting a garage to actually work on a rover 75 as they all seem very cautious and if one does you are never really sure they are confident with their work!

If I could drive that far I would be down tomorrow, but I am going to Southend next week but I have lost faith in the car now and will hire for this long journey. If it could drive that far I would be down tomorrow as I have a nephew who moved to Louth (never heard of it before) 2 years ago and loves it and we went down for his wedding and it is like an old english village, wonderful place. Thanks Dave.
