Assuming that the problem is the idle control valve, yes, but it might not be. We're told that certain ECUs have this "learning" ability, notably those controlling automatic gearboxes. Simon

Thanks, that bought a smile to my face today, despite the rainy weather

How to disconnect throttle cable
Cliff (or anyone else) - how did you disconnect the throttle cable from the throttle body?
As you can see below, my throttle body is covered in gunk and I need to take it off the car to clean it but I can't see how the cable comes out of the guide (arrowed above). This pin/lug on the end of the cable has to be released - but how? Rave page 556 just says: "Release Primary throttle cable from abutment bracket and throttle cam". The body itself is already unbolted from the inlet manifold so the cable is the only thing stopping me removing it. Last edited by Blink; 15th October 2020 at 12:48.. |

Glad you got the cable sorted . Paint wise, I used a can of Halfords etch primer, followed by a colour coat on Lagoon fron Paints4U.com, followed by some clearcoat.
Still can't get it to run right though . Last attempt it was 98% right, so took it for a short drive (10 miles or so). It drives fine, but when approaching junctions etc and lifting foot from throttle, the revs initially rise a little, then drop waaaay down almost to the point of stalling, before slightly recovering. It all maks for a nerve racking drive. I'm sure the problem is the idle control valve, and could probably be solved quite simply by swapping in the valve from the current throttle body, but I'm loath to try it in case I end up with no working throttle body LOL. I shall have another fiddle come spring time . Cliff

Thanks for the paint info Cliff - I'll investigate those.
Re yours - are you sure it's not something simple like the butterfly sticking on some obstruction? Mine's got a thin carbon-like deposit inside the barrel mouth - if it was further in the butterfly would probably scrape against it and stick/judder slightly. Just a thought. |

Springs & mayhem?
Cliff - just a quick question about cleaning the throttle body.
How did you dismantle it without the springs flying about all over the place? It seems to me that taking these nuts off is likely to cause uncoiled-spring mayhem. This definitely needs a good wash! Normally, I'd submerse the whole thing in a bath of petrol but it's probably not a good idea with all those valves & potentiometers etc. Btw, did you fit a new rubber gasket? (MHX100180 - #6 here).
