Not a car scam, but on Saturday morning at 8am I received an automated phone call from "Openreach" confirming that someone had hijacked my line and I needed to press 1 to speak with someone to resolve the problem.

So I pressed one and was put through to a man who sounded like the Indian "Service Providings" call centre operator from TV's Fonejacker. I went along with it for laughs and went as far as loading up the software from the internet onto my phone (which allows someone else to take over the device) to enable to, convincingly, follow the prompts and let him know what appeared on the screen for the next prompt. When he asked me what the 9 digit device reference was I read the number out but with half of the digits changed. He then asked me to read it again and I changed one of the digits again.

Exasperated, he asked me to read the number out again, so I went back to the first number and then he said it should be eight digits, not nine, so I dropped the end digit off. His manager then took over the call (in true Fonejacker style) and asked me the nine digit number, so I told him the original number but with another two numbers changed. The irritation in his voice was palpable as he probably felt he was seconds away from accessing a bank account or Paypal account.

In the end he asked me my name. I told him my name was Mr Kmiov, K-M-I-O-V.

He then asked me my first name - I replied - Juan - J-U-A-N.

For some reason he then just hung up...

They are very clever too, if you try and report the eBay ads it comes up with ‘listing no longer available’ even though the ad is still live!
