Thanks, is there any way to check the pressures with TOAF - I have tried and cannot see any way to read live data? My iCarSoft does every make of vehicle except Rover and only manages to detect 2 or 3 BMW modules.

All the wiring and plugs look good, all connections are seated well and there is no obvious damage to any of the wiring.

The ECU went off to Russ for the 160 remap (important things first ) so I am assuming if there were any major faults with it these would have been picked up at that point.

Is it safe to swap the ECU's over between the two cars (the red one is a Mk2 and the Silver one is a Mk1 - both are CDTi's)?

Sorry I don't use TOAF so can't help you there. You can't just swap the ECM over as it is coded for security. Was this happening before the ECM was sent off to Russ? If not then it is possible a fault developed after it was remapped and since it has been re-installed back in the car.

Just been reading your thread,

Have you changed the fuel filter?

Hi, Yes, was happening before the ECU was sent off.

Yes. And the PCV filter, and the air filter (whilst I had it apart).

Worth carefully inspecting the wiring from under the engine bay fusebox back to the ECM - not unknown for cables to get damaged in the inner wing area.

Well, this rumbles on, checked all the wiring again, all still looks fine, so decided I would take it to see Jamie.

Sadly the car has decided it doesn't want to go anywhere at the moment by failing it's MOT quite comprehensively....

Guess I will be focussing on that for the next few days..... Nothing there I can't fix, just time.....

So, some excellent news on this.

I got it through the MOT (all fails and advisories now fixed), and have been up to see Jamie to work his T4 magic. Turns out there was a fault code showing for the cam position sensor, which I could not see in TOAF.

I thought it strange that there was a code for the cam sensor as I have replaced that.

Anyway, now have it home, and have access to another 75 and have swapped cam sensors between the cars.... and .... the problem moved with the cam sensor.... So a new one is now on order.

Moral of the story.... even if you have replaced a part with a new one, do not assume that it is NOT faulty. I had replaced the cam sensor previously but obviously there is a problem with the replacement as well. Grrrrr.

Good to get a result with the starting problem. You mentioned cutting out earlier - did you find the reason for that or did it clear up by itself?
