Back in July Jeff in the critique thread, we discussed sky replacement using layering and this is what you said....
“It can indeed work very well, it's just not what I would call photography. It is however very much art in itself Me is a tog though and it's not something I choose to do. I'm of the get it right in camera. Use editing to bring out the best in the photo but not put in what wasn't there” __________________ Jeff. Do you still hold the view about not putting something in that isn’t there? |

I can't help but wonder, how often sky swapping actually takes place in professional photography.
I often look at images and think "how on earth did you get that lighting! Jeff's plane is a prime example!

It doesn’t stop there, the latest tools from Luminar AI, includes changing the colours of the iris in a person’s eyes, changing the body shape from fat to thin, not only changing the sky, but also adding in the water reflections in mirroring a changed sky over water, with sliding adjustments to the light/shadow to avoid detection by an expert photographer. I decided not to buy Luminar AI. |

I personally love all these editing tools, and find them great fun to use, as well as very satisfying. I believe they have a legitimate place in image production, provided they are used in an honest fashion. I have to agree with Jeff though (and I suspect you as well Phil), that the results should not be considered "photography". Capturing an image correctly in the lens in that one moment in time takes a very special talent and trumps a digitally enhanced image every time in my book. Cliff

I don't have CC but I do subscribe to a couple of photography channels on youtube, one of which does photoshop tutorials. Apparently one of the new features in CC 2021 can auto colorize black & white photos -
link to tutorial here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zx2xxCcnZNk&t=64s If anyone has a spare moment I'd love to see what it does with this photo, especially as I can remember the colours of our choir outfits!

Here you go, be interesting to hear how accurate it is. I've also had a quick stab at repairing the tear in the photo

Was this done by CC's auto colorize tool? A pretty good job apart from the fact that the cassocks we wore were light blue rather than red. Well done on repairing the tear - I can't see the join!

Yup, all done with a couple of clicks in Adobe really very simple. Shame it got the colour wrong, but I guess it's better than nothing.
I'm a little colour blind, so if I did it myself I suspect it would be considerably worse By the way, which one is you in the photo? Cliff

What makes you think I'm in the photo? Second row, fifth from the right (including the adult on the end).
