Default KV6 big end bearing failure

Hello all.

After fixing a timing issue where Cylinder 1 valves were bent the engine ran fine for about 50 miles before a rather loud rattle started to come from the engine. Garage checked all the pulleys etc as they would have been taken off etc. However on removing the sump pan the oil is full of little bits of white metal which suggests a Big End bearing failure. Is this common with KV6 engine and is it a doable fix?

I've been caught out massively from the previous who I believe knew there was something big wrong with the engine.

The first time I've read of big end failure on the forum.

Must be as rare as hens teeth. Enormous oil leak or oil pump failure to do that sort of damage.

Oil pick up pipe seal failure perhaps? There was a service bulletin for the early cars I believe?

Doubt if your V6 repair is economically viable. Would be cheaper to find a replacement engine in known good condition, or even given UK prices a running 75.

Daughter had a very nice 2.5 Tourer (well it was before she forgot we do have a waste bin), anyway had a timing belt jump with subsequent loss of compression. Spare engines are hard to come by so considered rebuilding until I spoke to the owner of the local Rover specialist garage.
He’s been given a dead V6 which suffered the same belt issue, stripped it down, replaced valves etc but when started there was a knock further down in the engine. Car was scrapped.
Figured there wasn’t much point spending time and a small fortune on my daughter’s car if only to have the same outcome, hers was scrapped too.

Regards

I've come to the same conclusion, (its actually in a freelander) but same engine. It may not be the big ends but its time a money trying to find what it is and really its not a project car. I'm at a loss what to do with the car now. Do you sell it as a non runner or just scrap it. everything else with the car is in perfect order
