Hi All,
Learnt to drive in Dads 1956 Black Vauxhall Wyvern. I remember it had a big wrap round rear window, a new feature for that model year and the famous Vauxhall Chromed Flutes in the bonnet. It had a column gear change to a three forward speed gear box, with first gear being a crash type gear. Quite fun on steep hills when second was too high. Passed my test first time in the Driving Schools Austin Somerset, again with column gear change, though with 4 forward gears, of 1954 vintage I think. Took my test in Harrow, Middlesex after 8 lessons. The family had moved down from Scotland earlier that same year. I transferred from Albion Motors main Truck and Bus chassis building factory in Glasgow, to their service depot in Brentfield Road Willesden, just off the North Circular Rd., where I completed my apprenticeship. Looking back it now seems a different age altogether. Happy times though, and when the country had an abundance of vehicle manufacturers of one kind and another.
Regards,
Telfer.

Default Driving Tests

My first driving test was in Tunbridge Wells on a 98cc James motorbike. (only 2 gears changed with a throttle type lever next to the twist grip throttle)
First car test was in a 1953 Chev Bel Air in Northern Rhodesia after emigrating there in 1957. Easy to pass as not much traffic, hills or many road signs ! Then bought a 'tin can' Ford Prefect of about 1950 vintage as my first car........ on which the diff immediately packed in.

I passed mine in my family 1947 Morris 8 at 17 years old at the second attempt.
What NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD-NAUGHTY WORD- me off a few years later was when my heavily pregnant wife passed her test first time in my frogeye Sprite, and that was in Cambridge among all the cyclists.

I passed first time in my dad's brand new custard yellow Austin Mini Metro

Then went on and saved up for a second hand All-agro super deluxe 1.3..... oh the power of the beast (engine subsequently seized flat out in the outside lane of the A2)

I passed first time in an Austin 1100, the same day as the Americans landed on the moon. Two giant steps for mankind in the same day!
