This may be a stupid question. If it is I'm sorry but I'm only trying to help.
It occurs to me that there are several control units in our cars. Do any of them contain the same capacitor ??

Please don't let it go for that!! This is a difficult one. I know you need a car so this taking time is not good. If I was closer, I'd keep popping over and trying this and that, like removing the capacitors and testing the values, or looking at the inverter circuit (the bit that actually charges the caps) to see if the problem could be there. But this all takes time. I've had a response from the maker of the capacitors. The bad news is they are a special part, so they aren't allowed to give me any data. However it seems they might be able to sell me some, so long as I'm prepared to buy just over a thousand. It depends how much they are each, I suppose. Even so, this route is going to take time. I only wish we could find a way to quickly prove for sure that the ECU would fix the problem. Anyone any comments on my previous suggestions of parts swapping? Finally, if you do decide to get rid (I hope not), please let me know as I might think about sitting it on the drive here and working on it. Could prove helpful if we can figure out how to repair them. |

No, questions are never stupid. That's how we learn (at least if we lsiten to the answer). Unfortunately these are a bit special, and unlike anything in other ECUs. Not even the petrols will have them. If you see my thread above you'll see I've found the manufacturer and so on and am in discussions. Other than that we are trying to find another diesel ECU. |

Try explaining they can't be re-used, and you just want a couple of bits from the inside. Maybe he'll know you are right and twenty notes might get it? Try as low as you can then see what he says. |

I would have said £20, worth a try, as duncan says you have to educate the seller
